Sonam Tshering is a versatile legal professional and educator currently working as an Assistant Professor at JSW Law, where he imparts knowledge in contracts, public procurement, privacy, and media law. Additionally, he serves as an assistant dean of the law schoolโ€™s research centre, contributes as an editor for law journals, and actively participates in various law school committees, including the Climate Change Taskforce. Joining JSW Law in 2017, Sonam brings a wealth of experience from his distinguished civil service career. Beginning as an Assistant Legal Officer in the Bhutan Narcotics Agency, he later served as a Legal Advisor to both the Narcotics Control Board and the Tobacco Control Board, concurrently acting as the Media Spokesperson for the agency. His exceptional contributions were acknowledged with the Regional Directorโ€™s award during the 2012 World No Tobacco Day from the Southeast Asia Regional Organization and World Health Organization. Transitioning into parliamentary service, Sonam held roles such as Parliamentary Committee Secretary and Legislative Officer in the National Assembly Secretariat. His diverse background includes stints as a Radio Reporter with the Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation, earning him the First Media Fellowship Award in 2009 from the Center for Science and Environment, based in New Delhi. Sonam advocates for social justice, evidenced by his weekly legal column in the Kuensel newspaper, where he has penned over 200 articles over four years on various social issues and justice matters. Additionally, Sonam serves as Chief Counsel for Druk Justice Legal Consultancy. His academic qualifications include an LL.M. from George Washington University, USA, LL.B from Bharati Vidyapeeth University, India, a Postgraduate diploma from the Royal Institute of Management, and a BSc from Sherubtse College.
